Description:
Job Summary:

Leads program of research that is recognized nationally and internationally in the defined area of expertise by designing and implementing major health-related research projects; develops, evaluates, and tests significant innovations in the organization, delivery, and financing of healthcare; publishes research findings in major scientific and professional journals and books; stimulates and guides overall development of Center of Health Research (CHR)/Center of Health Research Hawaii (CHRH) as pre-eminent research institution. Advise Kaiser Permanente and national policy-makers in the area of expertise.  Designs, develops, obtains funding for, and directs large ongoing research program comprising multiple, coordinated research, demonstration, and/or evaluation projects in defined area of expertise and interest in order to contribute to knowledge about health and healthcare delivery. Disseminates research results through presentations to scientific and professional groups and through publications in scientific and professional journals and books.

Essential Responsibilities:


  • Translates findings from research program into useful conclusions and provides scientific and health policy leadership in defined area of expertise deriving from research program; makes presentations to policy makers, KP providers and manager, and to others in healthcare field. Assumes major responsibility for demonstration projects in special interest of KP.

  • Provides technical consulting and professional service to KP, and SERVES on various KP committees and task forces.

  • Participates in ongoing maintenance of CHR/CHRH through assisting in development of Center policy, providing technical services and consultation to other CHR staff; HELPS define CHR/CHRHs future research agenda, and by maintaining security and confidentiality of research and medical data.

  • Participates in educational activities by helping to train undergraduate, graduate, and post-doctoral students pursuing health or health services research careers.

  • Provides service to the scientific and professional community through membership on scientific peer review groups and national policy and advisory boards.

  • Consults with local, state, and national voluntary and governmental agencies.

  • Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to provide culturally sensitive care and/or service.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience


  • Minimum five (5) years experience as investigator of major research projects (or equivalent such as Associate Professor).

  • Minimum fifteen (15) articles in peer-reviewed journals five (5) first-authored; minimum ten (10) articles will have been published within the last ten (10) years.

Education

  • Doctoral degree in social sciences, medicine, healthcare, or related field.
License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Participation in national expert panels and grant review committees.
  • Thorough knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods (from mathematics and statistics) for dealing with methodological and analytic problems in a defined area of expertise (e.g., epidemiology, sociology, economics).
  • Ability to build and supervise a team of research analysts, assistants, and other project staff to accomplish project tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Working knowledge of a standard statistical software application (e.g., SAS or SPSS) and relational database design.
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare organization, policy, practice, and management (to facilitate application of research to medical and healthcare phenomena).
  • Scientific writing skills; ability to write and communicate effectively to scientific/technical audiences.
  • Research methods and theory in health research related discipline; data analysis and interpretation skills, substantive knowledge in health-related discipline.
  • Note: Senior investigators from the academic fields typically hold membership in their respective professional/scientific associations.
  • Note: Senior investigators from health care fields typically hold licenses in their respective professions (e.g., M.D., D.D.S., R. Pharm R.N.).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of specialized theories or a body of knowledge of particular relevance to CHRs research agenda.
  • Excellent administrative skills for dealing with large, complex projects.Demonstrated knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia presentation PC applications.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience minimum five (5) years of pertaining to health-related research, theory, and policy.
  • Experience working in or with a health maintenance organization.
