Description:
Job Summary:

The Department of Research & Evaluation has the following divisions of research: Biostatistics, Behavioral, Clinical Trials, Epidemiologic, Health Services Research and Implementation Science, and Shared Services units including Central Business Office, Clinical Informatics and Research Databases, Communications, Information Technology, Operations, and Program Management Office. The Executive Scientific Director of Research provides scientific oversight for all the functional groups and guides the management oversight of the scientific investigators and staff of assigned functional groups. The Executive Scientific Director of Research is responsible for all research activities within the Southern California Region including compliance, grant/contract submission, report writing and publication and administration of research budgets. The Executive Scientific Director of Research is expected to develop and grow a well-established and highly regarded research group embedded within a prominent health system, leveraging research that our integrated system uniquely makes possible with the goal of improving the health of patients and the communities in which they live, with particular but not exclusive attention to directly impacting care delivery, fostering and maintaining a culture of mentorship, and supporting collaborative research with practicing physicians.



Essential Responsibilities:


  • Leads a team of 30+ research scientists and post-doctoral fellows, 390+ staff, $80M+ research portfolio, in coordination with the Regional Assistant Medical Director of Quality & Clinical Analysis, Regional Quality Administrator, and Scientific & Administrative Division Directors

  • Responsible for providing strategic vision and leadership, operational, and administrative oversight of the research activities conducted by SCAL R&E including grant/contract submission, research activities and report writing and publication, and oversees administration of research budgets.

  • Works with Scientists, Physician Investigators, and Administrators to manage projects and ensure compliance with timelines, protocols, and financial and sponsor regulations.

  • Leads or participates in strategic planning for the department and implements plans.

  • Serves as KPSC researchs primary spokesperson in organizational and national committees and other leadership groups.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience


  • Minimum eight (8) years of research leadership experience in a healthcare setting required, preferably experience in a complex, multi-faceted health care system and multi-service provider setting.

Education

  • An advanced Degree (e.g., PhD, MD, or equivalent doctoral degree).
License, Certification, Registration

Additional Requirements:

  • Accomplished researcher with a proven track record of obtaining and leading federally funded or equivalent research grants.
  • Extensive experience in sponsored programs administration and grants management.
  • Experienced in mentoring research professionals, team leadership and process facilitation.
  • Collaborative leadership style with proven ability to successfully influence physicians, senior management, and internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to lead professionals through influence, collaboration, and mentorship.
  • Proficient in team building, conflict resolution, group interaction, and project management.
  • Excellent skills in problem solving, project management, change management, and group process.
  • Extensive knowledge of regulations and processes associated with federal and industry sponsored research, including grant/contract submission process, budget development, reporting requirements, and relevant regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal law and regulations governing research involving human subjects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current CA Medical License
  • Desire to maintain limited clinical medical practice within Kaiser Permanente Southern California
