Description:
Job Summary:

Under direct supervision, prepares and processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist. Duties include embedding, cutting and staining a wide variety of tissue specimens. Assists with scheduling and regional reporting functions. Serves as a liaison with the pathologists with any issues regarding histology operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

Prepares tissue or bone section for fixation and dehydration manually or automatically, assures that all required solutions and chemicals are properly prepared and in place, and that atomic equipment is in working order. Embeds tissue in paraffin or other embedding agents positioning them to assure maximum surface of important to the pathologist will be available; verifies specimen by matching pathology slips. Determines best placement if blocked tissue in microtome, adjusts for angle of surface of important to the pathologist will be available; verifies specimen by matching pathology slips. Stains slides using routine, special or histochemical stains to demonstrate pathology and special features of tissue, and microscopically examines a representative sample to check the quality of staining being achieves; reprocesses slides as necessary to intensify or lighten stain. Prepares varied stains, solutions and other compounds used in histologic processes following exact procedures established by the laboratory and maintained in written form. Assists in orienting and training of current and new employees in functional tasks and equipment operation. Inspects microtome blades inside cryostat prior to use, sharpens and hones blades manually or by machine as necessary. Maintains records of all tissue and specimens and related histologic procedures following procedures. Inventories and order operational supplies as necessary. Establishes and maintains courteous, cooperative relations with the public and other personnel. Promotes, ensures, and improves customer service to internal/external customers by demonstrating skills which are consistent with the organizations philosophy of providing extraordinary customer relations and quality service. Prepares the monthly schedule for histology and Mohs clinic. Prepares all necessary local and regional reports. ] Assists with budget preparation. Ensures quality control is maintained. Serves as technical consultant on instrumentation issues. Recommends new methodologies, assists Supervisory Team by evaluating, incorporating and writing new procedures. Assists in keeping existing procedure manuals updated by periodically reviewing written procedures and eliminating obsolete procedures after conferring with Supervisory Team. Assists in the evaluation of work performance of other Clinical Laboratory Scientists, MLT and Medical Clinical Laboratory Scientist students assigned to the Lead Clinical Laboratory Scientists area. Discusses clinical laboratory problems of mutual interest with the Supervisory Team and Clinical Pathologists in order to provide continuous communication of vital information within operating units. Identify, address and attempt to resolve the problems/concerns in the department.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Must have minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Certified Histology Technician in a high-volume laboratory.
